Free event. Pets allowed.

As part of the national celebrations for the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta, bell ringers from Cheshire will be attempting to ring a peal of London Surprise Major at St. Mary’s, Nantwich, on Sunday 14 June starting at 1pm and taking around three hours. London Surprise Major is one of the more complex “standard surprise methods” on eight bells; it will be a first peal in the method for three of the band, which includes two local teenagers, one of whom was taught to ring at St. Mary’s.

There are many cafes in Nantwich from which the ringing may be heard. St. Mary’s church, which is only a little younger than the Magna Carta (as building started in 1280), is well worth a visit to enjoy the architectural and spiritual beauty of this ancient building at the heart of the Nantwich community. Chester Cathedral Choir will be singing at the Choral Evensong service at 5pm after the peal as part of their Summer Tour.
